The British Council, in collaboration with celebrated Malawian fashion designer Lilly Alfonso, has officially launched Creative DNA Malawi, an exciting fashion acceleration programme aimed at empowering emerging designers and fashion entrepreneurs. This initiative marks a major milestone in Malawi’s creative landscape, promising to nurture talent through hands-on mentorship, training, business development, and access to international markets.
Creative DNA is not new to Africa. With a track record of success in Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Zimbabwe, and Senegal, the programme has already supported over 200 designers across the continent. Through initiatives like showcases at London Fashion Week, Hub of Africa Fashion Week, and #CANEXPresentsAfrica, Creative DNA has helped position African fashion on the global stage. Its arrival in Malawi signifies the beginning of a new era for the country's fashion industry.
Speaking at the launch, Vera Ng’oma, Country Director of the British Council Malawi, emphasized the programme’s significance:
“Creative DNA has supported over 200 fashion businesses across Africa, equipping designers with the skills, funding, and networks to scale sustainably. With Africa’s fashion industry valued at $31 billion, this expansion to Malawi strengthens our commitment to positioning fashion as a viable career path, driving innovation and economic growth.”
The programme in Malawi will run for nine months and include a series of workshops and training sessions that cover everything from digital marketing and branding to sustainable design practices. Participants will also benefit from one-on-one mentorship with industry experts, gaining tailored insights into how to grow and manage their fashion brands. A major highlight will be the final showcase event, where participants will present their collections to both local and international audiences — offering a launchpad to broader exposure and business opportunities.

At the heart of this initiative is Lilly Alfonso’s visionary 100-Year Plan, a long-term strategy focused on building a sustainable future for Malawi’s creative industry. This plan is deeply rooted in creating space for young creatives to explore, scale, and take their ideas global.
“By partnering with the British Council on Creative DNA Malawi, we are paving the way for young creatives to dream big and take their ideas to the world,” said Alfonso. “Together, we can ensure that the future of Malawi’s creative industry is bright and full of opportunities.”

With its expansion to Malawi, the British Council is reaffirming its mission to create opportunities, strengthen the creative economy, and build lasting global connections. Creative DNA Malawi is not just a programme; it’s a platform for transformation — and the beginning of something truly extraordinary.
